'Elaine's terrace is the only place in Antigua you'll want to be. We were so chilled out, we didn't venture outside for the first five days." Michelle and Trevor.
"Our holiday was one of total relaxation. At Avocado Cottage we mastered the art of doing nothing" June.
A cute, cosy cottage nestling in the green rolling hills of the Antigua countryside, Avocado Cottage was built by writer and novelist Elaine Spires as a vacation home. In its quiet, uniquely relaxing atmosphere she wrote four of her seven novels and one of her books of short stories. She is now opening up her home to YOU so that you can indulge in the TOTAL RELAXATION it offers. You will have the whole house to yourselves and if Elaine is off-island, her friend and colleague Franklyn will be on hand to host and advise you.
The cottage is set in a mature, triangular garden and the pool area offers complete privacy, whether you want to practise an energetic workout or simply float away your stresses and cares to the gentle sounds of the crickets and tree frogs, accompanied by beautiful tropical birds, dragonflies and hummingbirds that hover and flit among the plant pots and palms. A welcome, cooling breeze always blows through and across the terrace and house. Cows, goats and horses roam freely on the pastures nearby. This is the gentle Antigua of a bygone age.
The cottage is fully equipped and offers laundry facilities. A large, well-stocked supermarket is a short drive away making Avocado Cottage an excellent value-for-money self-catering experience. From the veranda of Avocado Cottage you can see local landmark, Sleeping Indian and if you're very tall, you can just about see the Caribbean Sea in the distance.
When you do venture out, Avocado Cottage is just a short ride on the local bus from the capital city, St John's, where you'll find fresh, local fruits and vegetables, quaint little stores, trendy boutiques and coffee shops, bars, amazing duty-free bargains on perfume, tobacco, rum and exquisite, unique jewellery alongside some truly great restaurants. The colourful converted warehouses of Redcliffe Quay, the Vendors Mall, Heritage Quay, the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, the Cathedral, the newly restored Government House and world famous home of Caribbean cricket and Carnival the Antigua Recreation Ground are all worth a visit. If the beach is your thing some of the island's finest are within a very short drive - Hawksbill, Galley, Pensioners, Armani - and beautiful Deep Bay is just a fifteen minute walk away. If you enjoy snorkelling there's a shipwreck there for you to explore, too.
But quite frankly, you will so enjoy chilling at Avocado Cottage that you might spend your entire vacation in the rocking chairs or under the parasols on the recliners, dipping in and out of the pool, enjoying the Art of Doing Nothing.
